Title: Scientific Journal Assignment-Sensors!

Introduction

This unit is designed to introduce students to scientific journal articles and teach them about current research involving sensors.

Objectives

Students gain a deeper understanding of how sensors are incorporated in our everyday lives. They will understand the concept of a sensor and different application areas incorporating sensors.

Required Equipment

Computer Access or Library.

Procedure

1. The student will log onto the portaportal web page http://my.portaportal.com
(Guest Name Gk12sensors!) and choose a sensor article that interests her/him, choosing from the three posted for that week or for that sensor unit.

2. After reading the article and possibly taking down some notes on the article, the student will take a short quiz (3-4 questions) on the article.

3. Every couple of weeks the topic or theme of the sensor articles will change.

4. Students discuss the different sensors and how the sensors impact their society.

Expected results

Students will be able to address some or all of the following issues after each quiz:

1. What does the sensor detect?
2. How is the sensor designed?
3. Why is the sensor important in its particular application area?
4. What are some advantages & disadvantages of the sensor?
5. How is the sensor used to detect a certain physical property?

Troubleshooting

If students have trouble accessing the website to get the sensor articles, put a folder of the articles on reserve in the school library.
