The Carroll R. Lee Scholarship Fund
The Carroll R. Lee Scholarship Fund, was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2001 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, with a gift from the Robert N. Haskell Trust, The late Mr. Haskell, former President of Bangor Hydro-Electric Company, was a graduate of the University's College of Engineering and a loyal supporter of the University -both during his lifetime and through gifts from the charitable foundation established by his will. This scholarship fund is established on the occasion of the retirement of Robert S. Briggs, President of Bangor Hydro, the Trustee of the Robert N Haskell Trust, and a close colleague of Mr. Lee.
Upon Mr. Briggs' retirement, Mr. Lee will become President of Bangor Hydro. Both Mr. Briggs and Mr, Lee worked with Mr. Haskell in their earlier years at Bangor Hydro. Establishing a scholarship fund in the name of Mr. Lee is appropriate for several reasons, First, Mr. Lee is himself a distinguished graduate of the University, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering, and a master's degree in business administration. Second, he is widely regarded in the region as one of the most knowledgeable leaders in the electric industry. Third, it is through Mr. Lee's skill and tireless efforts that Bangor Hydro has successfully weathered the most daunting challenges in the company's 100-year history. Finally, it is consistent with Mr. Haskell's practice during his lifetime, for he established many scholarship funds at the University - always in the name of others with whom he was acquainted. Mr. Haskell would have been very proud of the achievements of the young engineer he brought on board in the early 1970s.
The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship aid for deserving undergraduate students who are residents of Maine and are attending the University of Maine majoring in electrical engineering, Preference for awards shall be based on a combination of financial need and academic merit. It is the donor's intent that, while the scholarship shall be used to assist those in financial need, among those with a demonstrated need, preference would be given to applicants who have achieved high academic merit. To further guide the selection process, it is the donor's wish that the scholarship should assist those applicants who appear to emulate the qualities of Mr. Lee. Besides Maine residency and academic merit, those include such qualities as integrity, humility, determination, diligence and vision.
Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the Fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor's intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion. The Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department shall make selection of the recipient(s). The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.
