The ECE department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees. The department has a history of over 115 years with proud and accomplished alumni, students, and faculty. Our graduates are well sought after and in recent years two of them were selected by the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society as the most outstanding students in the nation. The mission of the UMaine ECE Department is to educate students in the professional practice of electrical and computer engineering. Our educational programs encourage lifelong learning, foster teamwork and leadership skills, and promote creative discovery. bullet Mastering MATLAB books reach 100,000 copy threshold.

The "Mastering MATLAB" series of books written by Bruce Littlefield and Duane Hanselman has now crossed the 100,000 copy threshold. As of June 30, 2007, 103,665 copies have been sold. In addition to American and International English editions, this text has been translated into Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese.

bullet IEEE Honors Maine Chapter

IEEE HQ has selected the Maine IEEE Communications Society Chapter as one of the four best chapters in the world, one each from North America (Maine Chapter), Latin America, Europe/Middle East, and Asia/Pacific.

bullet The Most Outstanding ECE Student

Priyanth Chandrasekar has been selected as the 2007 Most Outstanding Electrical or Computer Engineering student in the nation by Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Honor Society. This is the second UMaine student to have achieved this prestigious award in the last four years (Matthew Rodrigue in 2004). In the 42-year history of this award, 49 students have been selected of which 3 are UMaine graduates (Louise Veilleaux in 1979). This represents the highest number of awards given to any school. There are only two other schools with the same number of awards, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of California Berkeley!
